Adventures in Cake Making

Izzy is turning three and she loves princesses. I decided to find some ways to make her birthday really fun without spending the big bucks. So I made a Barbie Cake, a pinata, and had some fun "princess" inspired games, with the favorite being "Kiss the Frog."

The cake was really not difficult, it just took some planning. The easiest way I found to make it was to use multiple cakes. This helps with even baking. Some ladies tried the one cake method and ended up the middle uncooked. I used two 8 inch round pans and a pyrex bowl I have (from a set of bowls) that was 8 inches at the top. Baked the cakes (I used 2 box mixes), let them cool, and then cut off the domes so they would sit on top of each other without tipping. You have to cut holes out the middles big enough for the legs. In one video I watched they used a tool like a cookie cutter, I just went old-fashioned on them and used a knife... it worked just fine. Then you put frosting between each layer and do a crumb coat (a first layer of frosting that you put on and then refridgerate so the top layer is crumb free). The rest is as follows . . .

Test. Made sure the cake was the right height.
Finished crumb coat.

Finished skirt.

The kids loved the cake, at least my kids did. It took some time, but it was a fun, cake adventure, so in my eyes it was worth it.
Happy Birthday Izzy!

I love you mommy! Will you kiss my cheek?

I can hardly believe my baby girl is turning 3, it doesn't seem that long ago that I was driving myself to the hospital (again). I am very excited for Izzy's birthday! We have some fun things planned for her party tomorrow night with the Langstons. I wish both sides of our family could be together but my family had plans. That is what I get for planning last minute, but I will see my parents and sis and family Monday.

I will be posting some pictures and such. The lipstick on Corban's cheek is for the game "Kiss the Frog" which is sort of a "pin the tail on the donkey" type game, only I am having them put on lipstick and then they will get spun around and have to try and kiss the frog poster on the lips. Fun! I tried out the new red lipstick today and Corban got all lovey and then when he asked for a kiss I knew he was just hoping to see a preview of how the lips marks would look. He was so excited. I also made a Barbie cake. You know, the kind you always wanted as a wee lass, the one with the doll in the middle and the cake is the dress. More to come...I will post pictures! Love you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ISABELLE!!!

Corban is cool

He is getting pretty good at coloring in the lines. He is constantly running into the computer room to print off coloring pages. He is so good at navigating the WWW to get what he wants (He clicks on Favorites and there are 4 or 5 wesites that I put at the top of the list for him) that I have to disable the internet or lock the door so he doesn't print out a whole ream of paper. I really don't mind much. We have been trying to watch less electronic babysitter for a while now and with his extra interest in printing things out to color or give to friends has helped.

We have a white board in the Kitchen, well in the doorway/hallway into the kitchen. Last week he asked me to spell some words for him. After the first three he was done, but I told him we would do "this" once a day and it would help him learn words. Sometimes he will erase the three words and tell me, "we can do this two times a day." He doesn't really learn phonetically, so the 3 words at a time has been good because he memorizes the word. I probably need to be doing review of the words we learned each day. Sometimes I do erase the words and put them in different order and he usually does great still. He is growing up so fast!

He will start kindergarden next year! He loves school. His teacher is great. I am so greatful for the school district having this program. I don't know what I would have done without it. Corb is wonderful.

Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!

Someone gave Corb these jammies for Christmas! There is a light on the chest and beautiful wings. For some reason those glorious wings remind me of the frilled lizard....

A productive New Year Morning.

Thanks to Laurelyn for lending us the sled. We went sledding at the school this morning. The kids loved and and did not want to leave.
